1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and move it gently in circular motions. Timing is also important. Brush for at least two minutes each time, and replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn. If remembering to brush is a challenge, consider setting a reminder on your phone or using an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.

Take about 18 inches of floss and wrap it around your fingers, leaving a small section to work with. Slide the floss gently between your teeth, curving it around each tooth in a C-shape. Move it up and down to clean thoroughly.

The key is consistency. Floss at least once a day, ideally before bed, to remove the day’s build-up.

If left untreated, plaque can harden into tartar, which cannot be cleaned with brushing at home. Another benefit of water is its role in supporting saliva production. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against decay. It helps neutralize acids, wash away debris, and even repair the early stages of tooth decay. Staying hydrated is especially important if you live in a dry climate or take medications that cause dry mouth.

Make it a habit to drink water throughout the day, particularly after meals or snacks. If your local water supply contains fluoride, that’s a bonus—it strengthens your enamel and helps prevent cavities.

Your diet plays a significant role in your dental health, and fiber-filled fruits and vegetables are some of the best foods you can eat for your teeth. These foods stimulate saliva production, which acts as a natural cleanser for your teeth and gums.

Crunchy options like apples, carrots, and celery are particularly beneficial. They not only provide essential nutrients for strong teeth and gums but also help scrub away plaque as you chew. Dark leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are also excellent choices. They’re rich in calcium and other minerals that fortify your enamel.
