Veneers are a relatively quick, easy way to hide a myriad of tooth imperfections and achieve a more brilliant smile. With a variety of choices in veneers today, you can tailor your procedure to your specific needs, desired results and budget. Dr. Kohani at La Jolla Dentistry specializes in veneers, having worked with master ceramicists in this area to help his patients achieve a beautiful, natural appearance. If you are interested in veneers, there are a few basic facts about this procedure you need to know.
How do Veneers Work?
Veneers are thin shells crafted of a variety of materials that fit over teeth to provide consistency and hide minor imperfections like chips, cracks or discolorations. The procedure can be performed while preserving all or nearly all of the natural tooth, making this a relatively conservative way to improve your smile. Despite their conservative nature, veneers can offer dramatic, long-lasting results, making them a popular option for patients that don’t have significant tooth damage but are not satisfied with their appearance.
When to Consider Veneers
Veneers can be used to address the following concerns:
• Cracks or chips on the tooth’s surface
• Discoloration that cannot be addressed with whitening treatments
• Small gaps or spaces between the teeth
• Teeth that are different lengths or sizes
• Misshapen teeth
• Teeth that are not in proportion to the rest of the facial features
Veneers work best with teeth that are in relatively good health with primarily cosmetic concerns. This treatment will not address underlying dental problems and should not be placed unless those problems are satisfactorily treated first. If you tend to clench or grind your teeth while you sleep, veneers might not be a good choice since they could be damaged by this activity.
Veneer Options
There are two basic types of veneers offered at La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics:
Porcelain Veneers
Dr. Kohani specializes in no-prep porcelain veneers, such as Lumineers, Vivaneers and DURAthin Veneers. These products offer excellent results in just two appointments and require little if any reduction in the natural tooth. In some cases, the veneers can be placed in a single visit.
Composite Veneers
In addition to the no-prep veneers, Dr. Kohani also offers composite resin veneers to address minor imperfections like small chips or cracks. These veneers are both inexpensive and minimally-invasive, making them a good choice for patients that need less cosmetic improvement.
About the Procedure
Before the veneers are placed, Dr. Kohani will likely remove a small amount of enamel from the natural tooth to prepare it for the bonding process. This will ensure the veneers are flush with the natural teeth after they are placed over the teeth in need of cosmetic enhancement. An impression is then taken of the natural teeth so that the veneers can be customized to fit over them precisely. The impressions are usually sent to an authorized laboratory so the veneers can be created.
Once the veneers are completed, they can be placed over the teeth in a single appointment. This process typically does not involve the need for any injections or anesthesia. When the veneers are bonded to the natural teeth, Dr. Kohani will check them to ensure they match up with your teeth for a natural, beautiful smile.
You don’t have to let chipped, stained teeth get in the way of your self-confidence. Veneers are a relatively simple way to correct those imperfections and achieve the beautiful smile you have always wanted.
