How It Works
What Is the Process for a Smile Makeover?
Step One
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Kohani at La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics by calling (858) 295-0603 or using our online contact form.
Step Two
Meet with Dr. Kohani for an in-depth consultation to discuss your cosmetic concerns, learn your options, and choose the smile design treatment plan that will deliver your dream smile.
Step Three
Before making permanent changes, you will return to preview a wax mock-up of your new smile. You will work with Dr. Kohani to perfect the plan based on adjustments made to the wax-up.
Step Four
Your teeth are prepared for permanent porcelain crowns or veneers, and your adjacent teeth may be whitened if you want a seamlessly brighter smile. Same-day smile makeovers can be completed within hours.
Step Five
Essential follow-up appointments are scheduled to make final adjustments or if multiple visits are necessary, such as with orthodontic care.
Your Smile Makeover Consultation
Your smile makeover starts with an initial consultation. Before cosmetic dental work begins, Dr. Kohani will review your medical history, ask about your concerns and goals, and obtain detailed 3D digital scans of your teeth and gums using CEREC® and iTero®. These accurate, three-dimensional models of your dentition allow precise treatment planning designed to meet your specific needs.

What Are My Smile Makeover Options?
La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics offers a variety of smile makeover options catering to different needs and preferences.
You can choose from any of the treatments mentioned and either a one-day smile makeover or a more extensive plan to address structural issues, discoloration, missing teeth, orthodontic problems, or tooth replacement with dental implants.
-
One-Day Smile Makeovers
La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic (CEREC®), which allows us to perform smile makeovers in one day.
CEREC® is a comprehensive digital software system that can design, fabricate, and finish durable ceramic dental restorations in one hour. Your digital dental scan is uploaded to the CEREC® interface, where Dr. Kohani designs your high-quality porcelain crowns or veneers.
Dr. Kohani collaborates with a master ceramist to ensure the highest levels of care. He provides detailed specifications for the ceramic restorations he designs, which are used to create the final prosthetic. Additionally, Ana Torres, our certified CEREC® designer, plays an integral role in the fabrication process. Your one-visit smile makeover may include the following:
Professional Teeth Whitening
This popular procedure involves the removal of stains to reveal a brighter smile. La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry uses advanced whitening methods for in-office teeth whitening, such as:
- OPALESCENCE® BOOST
- KÖR®
We also provide at-home whitening kits to maintain your results.
Porcelain Veneers
This transformative cosmetic treatment uses thin porcelain shells tailored to your natural smile and bonded to the front surface of prepared teeth. These restorations can address issues like chips, cracks, permanent discoloration, or gaps. Veneers are a transformative, durable, natural-looking solution to enhance your smile.
Tooth preparation for porcelain veneers involves removing a small amount of enamel to ensure a proper fit and strong bond.
Dental Crowns and Bridges
When a broken or previously infected tooth has been treated, a porcelain crown can restore its shape, strength, function, and natural appearance. Dr. Kohani starts by taking x-rays and digital scans of the teeth and gums to gain a complete picture of the patient’s dental needs. Cavities are meticulously cleaned of decay, infection is treated, and the tooth is prepared for restoration with the crown.
Dental bridges are designed to replace one or two missing teeth. They consist of artificial teeth (pontics) secured to crowns that are secured to healthy, adjacent teeth.
Tooth preparation for crowns involves reducing the size of damaged teeth or those used to secure a bridge.
Replacing Metal With Tooth-Colored Resin Fillings
Metal fillings can be unsightly, especially when placed in front teeth, and may contribute to health issues. If you have amalgam fillings and want to replace them with tooth-colored composite fillings, this can also be done during a one-day smile makeover.
-
More Extensive Smile Makeovers
However, if you have cosmetic or oral health concerns that require more time, such as crooked, misaligned, or missing teeth that you wish to replace with dental implants, these procedures require more time.
Orthodontic Treatment
Correcting misaligned teeth is achieved through Orthodontic treatments, such as braces or clear aligners can correct misaligned teeth. La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry offers advanced orthodontic options for discreet and efficient teeth straightening.
For those seeking discreet teeth straightening, Invisalign® provides an innovative solution. These clear aligners gradually shift teeth into their desired positions, offering a virtually invisible orthodontic experience.
Accelerated orthodontics expedites the entire orthodontic process, reducing treatment time.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are a more comprehensive tooth replacement method than bridges, as they provide artificial tooth roots and crowns. While they take longer than a bridge, dental implants help preserve underlying bone and help prevent resorption, a condition that can lead to unwanted changes in the shape of the jaw.

What Is Recovery Like After a Smile Makeover?
Recovery periods vary depending on the treatments performed. Generally, patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity, which typically subsides within 24–48 hours, with dental implants taking longer. Following post-operative care instructions is crucial to ensure optimal healing and results.
After recovery, you can enjoy a remarkable smile transformation that can last decades with proper oral care and maintenance. Regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene practices, and lifestyle choices contribute to sustaining the newly enhanced smile.

Our patients LOVE us, and you will too!
Dr. Kohani changed my smile by using his special veneering technique with minimal alteration of my own teeth. He is an absolute perfectionist and does unbelievable work. No one can tell I have veneers; they just notice my bright and shining smile.
I have gone to Dr. Kohani a few times now and have had nothing but great experiences. I was impressed with the friendly staff that is welcoming and organized. We all know these visits aren’t necessarily ones we look forward to, but Dr. Kohani makes this experience quite pleasant…
I was new to La Jolla, out looking for a dentist and I actually walked into Dr. Kohani’s office by mistake. Well, it was one of the best mistakes I made. My teeth needed a ton of work and Dr. Kohani did a beautiful job. I needed fillings, root canals and veneers. Dr. Kohani was able to do it all…
Smile Makeover FAQ
Are the digitally crafted veneers safe and comfortable?
Although veneers are crafted in one day, these restorations are perfectly safe and effective and maintain the same high quality as traditional veneers.
When should I consider getting a one-day smile makeover?
When two or more teeth need repair, the entire smile line may require cosmetic enhancement. This is when you should consider a smile makeover to help improve your smile as a whole rather than restructuring one or two teeth.
How long does a traditional smile makeover procedure take compared to a one-visit smile makeover?
A traditional smile makeover typically takes two to three appointments over a few weeks, offering a highly customized approach using advanced technology and precise techniques. This process ensures optimal aesthetics and durability with expertly crafted veneers and crowns designed to complement your natural smile. While many offices require multiple visits and temporary restorations, at our office, we enhance the traditional makeover experience by streamlining it for greater efficiency and comfort. Our advanced technology and expert craftsmanship ensure that your smile transformation is completed with fewer visits, reducing wait times while maintaining exceptional quality, precision, and personalized care throughout the process.
What should I do if I require a more complete tooth replacement technique?
Dr. Kohani offers full-mouth dental implants that can replace up to 12 teeth in the upper and lower jaws. The whole process takes about 16 weeks, and it is recommended that you replace both upper and lower teeth at the same time to reduce the cost and number of appointments. Once your mouth heals, full function is restored, resulting in the smile of your dreams.
