There’s nothing like the feeling of clean teeth and a fresh mouth that follows a session with a great dental hygienist. But getting teeth professionally cleaned regularly is about much more than a great feeling. It can be basic upkeep for overall good health.

Why Are Dental Cleanings So Important?

According to the American Dental Association, regular cleanings can help prevent dental and gum disease, conditions that could impact your overall health.

During cleaning, potential tooth, gum, and mouth problems can be spotted early and corrected before they become more serious.

In addition to helping prevent periodontal (gum) disease, regular dental cleanings can help:

  • Prevent cavities
  • Reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Reduce risk of dementia

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

Any dental cleaning session will begin with a thorough examination by a dentist and/or dental hygienist. They will probe teeth for cavities, erosion, or displacement and gums for signs of inflammation or gingivitis (early stages of gum disease).

At this point, you should point out any changes you have noticed in your mouth or any points of ongoing pain.

This examination will be followed by scaling, which removes plaque and tartar build-up from between teeth and just below the gum line. It can be done manually with a metal tool or with an ultrasonic device and water for larger deposits.

Polishing follows scaling, with the hygienist using a handheld electric tool with a rubber tip and gritty polishing compound. After a final flossing and rinse, your teeth should feel smooth and clean.

Additional treatments like fluoride application (using a gel and tray), whitening, etc., may be offered in conjunction with cleaning. This may also be the time when your dental professional will suggest further procedures like getting cavities filled or seeing a periodontal specialist for gum disease to be performed at a future date.

How Often Should I Get My Teeth Cleaned?

Most dentists recommend teeth cleaning every six months. This regular examination and cleaning will keep cavities at bay, allow potentially serious problems like gum disease or mouth cancers to be caught and dealt with early, and establish a routine of responsible dental that is vital for overall health and wellbeing.

Most insurance plans will support this schedule of care.
