Patients who have experienced sedation dentistry report having a much more pleasant, relaxed visit to the office.Dr. Kohani offers both oral and inhaled sedation. Which choice is right for you may depend upon several factors- and we encourage you to consult with Dr. Kohani to help decide which choice is right for you.
Oral sedation is a light form of sedation, administered by a pill. Oral sedation is often used for patients with mild anxiety or longer or more complex procedures. With this form of sedation, the patient remains awake, but in a ‘twilight’ state throughout the procedure. The patient breathes on their own, but is very sleepy, and will feel very relaxed. It takes a few hours to recover fully from oral sedation, so the patient will need to have a friend or family member drive them to and from the office.
Inhaled sedation is administered through the use of nitrous oxide, more commonly referred to as ‘laughing gas.’ This form of sedation is effective for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. Nitrous oxide is delivered by use of a small mask that fits over your nose, and calms anxiety, raises pain threshold, and some patients report it making time seem to pass much more quickly than normal. At the end of the appointment, the patient resumes breathing regular oxygen, and the effects of the nitrous oxide disappear almost immediately.
