Invisalign

Many adult patients with misaligned teeth desire an orthodontic solution that is efficient and aesthetically pleasing, but oftentimes the idea of wearing metal braces for two or more years is enough for some patients to opt out of orthodontic care altogether. What many patients may not realize is that straighter teeth are also healthier teeth, meaning that orthodontic treatment can prevent certain health issues in the future. For patients who are looking for a treatment method that straightens teeth without detracting from their appearance, Dr. Kohani provides Invisalign clear aligners as a compromise. With a series of invisible braces, you can gain straighter teeth without anyone knowing that you are receiving orthodontic care at La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics.

Work Toward the Perfect Smile without Metal

Invisalign consists of a series of comfortable and clear plastic aligners that work to shift misaligned teeth gradually into a straighter and healthier position. The aligners are made of PBA-free plastic that fit smoothly over your teeth and looks virtually invisible. Invisalign is also removable, which makes it easier to eat, drink and practice regular oral hygiene like brushing, rinsing, and flossing. Many adult patients prefer the transparency and flexibility that Invisalign is able to provide as well as its aesthetic appeal.

Benefits of Invisalign Include:

  • Virtually invisible plastic aligners
  • A metal-free method of straightening teeth
  • Removable aligners for comfortable eating and drinking
  • Improved oral hygiene as compared to other orthodontic methods
  • Comfortable retainers that can be worn for long periods
  • Easy to use and fit right into patient’s daily routine
  • Custom made for patient’s dentition

Using Invisalign requires active participation from the patient who wears it in order for the treatment to be effective. The retainers must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day in order for the teeth to move the necessary amount. If the teeth have not fully shifted in time for the following aligner, then the aligner set could become compromised. Dr. Kohani will explain the necessary requirements for your compliance in order to help you determine whether Invisalign treatment is right for you.

Why Straighten Your Teeth?

Patients who come into Dr. Kohani’s office for orthodontic treatment will typically do so for cosmetic purposes. Crooked teeth can affect self-esteem and create social hindrances. However, straightening teeth has many health benefits as well, including fewer chances of tooth decay and cavities. Crooked teeth have an increased chance of retaining food debris, and this debris can be harder to clean if the teeth are not properly aligned. Orthodontic treatment is often a preventative solution for the dentition and ensures that your teeth remain as healthy as possible through the years.

Receiving Invisalign Treatment with Dr. Kohani

Invisalign is most effective on patients who are exhibiting minor tooth misalignments and will not work for those with severe tooth crowding, rotated teeth, missing teeth or poor bite positions. In order to determine your candidacy for Invisalign, Dr. Kohani will perform a dental examination and take x-rays to understand the extent of your misalignment. If Invisalign is right for you, then Dr. Kohani will design a treatment plan that outlines how your teeth should shift into place using the clear aligners. Your treatment plan along with your x-rays, dental records, tooth impressions and bite registration are sent to an Invisalign laboratory where another, virtual treatment plan is created that depicts the final results of your dentition once your treatment is completed. Once Dr. Kohani approves the suggested treatment plan from Invisalign, your set of aligners will be customized and created in their laboratory.

The amount of aligners you receive will depend on the extent of your misalignment as well as your individual treatment plan. However, anywhere from 12 to 30 aligners can be created, and total treatment time can take between 6 and 15 months to complete. You will change your aligners every couple of weeks until your treatment regimen is complete, and you will only need to visit Dr. Kohani for an examination every four to six weeks to ensure that your teeth are being aligned properly. It is important that you remain active and diligent as you undergo treatment so that you stay in line with your proposed treatment plan. Wearing your aligners for the required amount of time will ensure optimal results. Additionally, removing your aligners when eating tougher foods or drinking hot beverages will keep your aligners from warping and disrupting the progress of your treatment.

Although Invisalign is more cosmetically appealing than metal braces, the technique is still capable of producing a healthier smile. If you do not want the appearance of metal to impact your appearance, then Invisalign treatment may be right for you.
