Teeth Whitening Faqs

  • Depending on the concentration you receive, you can wear your whitening trays for 30-60 minutes during the day. Your at-home treatment is entirely customizable for your lifestyle.

  • If you are receiving a crown or veneers, it is best to have your existing teeth whitened first and then have the ceramic material stained to match.

  • Although teeth whitening provides excellent results, it cannot prevent new stains from forming. However, you can maintain your results through proper oral hygiene and limiting the number of staining foods you consume.

  • Some patients experience some sensitivity and mild discomfort for one to three days after teeth whitening, but this largely depends on the type of whitening treatment you choose. If you know that you have sensitive teeth, opt for Iveri™ in-office teeth whitening, which can be used on sensitive teeth, or Opalescence® Boost in-office teeth whitening, which does not interfere with tooth sensitivity.

  • While there is no clear evidence that teeth whitening is harmful during pregnancy, it’s also unclear what the long-term side effects can be. In general, mothers are encouraged to wait until after giving birth to have their teeth whitened.

  • Most insurance policies do not cover teeth whitening, as it’s considered an elective and cosmetic procedure. You can contact your insurance provider for confirmation about your coverage.

  • You should notice visibly whiter teeth immediately after the procedure, with the results lasting from six months to a year if you follow proper guidelines. It’s recommended to get touch-ups one to two times a year to battle the natural stains that come with eating and drinking.

  • Anyone with healthy gums, teeth, and overall oral hygiene can benefit from teeth whitening. A professional teeth whitening treatment has been proven to provide results that can last for an extended period. If you have oral issues that prevent you from being a teeth whitening candidate, talk to your dentist to learn more about your other options.

  • Dentists understand what can and cannot harm your teeth. Professional whitening products keep to a carbamide peroxide level of 10 percent or less. This level is shown to have no adverse effect on the enamel surface. Additionally, there is no evidence that teeth whitening hurts teeth nerves. It’s a safe procedure that is recommended by all professional dental associations.

  • The length of the treatment will depend on which specific treatment you choose. On average, expect the treatment to take between 15 and 30 minutes.

  • Teeth whitening products do not significantly impact crowns or veneers. Ask your dentist if teeth whitening is right for you before making any decisions.

  • Teeth whitening is most effective on yellow-stained teeth. Individuals get yellow-stained teeth from eating foods and drinking coffee, red wine, tea, and smoking. Unfortunately, individuals with brownish-colored teeth may find that the teeth whitening doesn’t work well for them. Additionally, individuals with grayish or purple-stained teeth will likely find that teeth whitening has little to no impact.

Consult with your dentist to ensure that teeth whitening can get you the results you need. If teeth whitening isn’t the solution for you, your dentist may have other potential solutions, such as veneers.
