Invisalign® in San Diego, CA

Many men and women who struggle with misaligned teeth desire an orthodontic solution that is efficient and discreet. The idea of wearing metal braces for two or more years is enough for some patients to opt out of orthodontic care altogether. At La Jolla Cosmetic Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer Invisalign® as an alternative to traditional braces.

Invisalign® is an innovative and highly effective teeth-straightening system utilizing clear aligners to move teeth in a graduated manner to correct misalignment and bite issues. Invisalign® aligners are changed every one to two weeks with each tray getting you closer to your orthodontic treatment goals.

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign® in San Diego, CA?

Crooked teeth affect the appearance of your smile and can inhibit social interactions. Treatment with Invisalign® clear dental aligners provides excellent results and can often be used with accelerated orthodontic techniques for a shorter treatment time.

Invisalign® is specifically designed for orthodontic patients who desire the following benefits:

  • Straighter teeth
  • Improved bite
  • Preserved tooth enamel
  • Increased confidence
  • Convenience as aligners are easy to remove for brushing and eating

Misaligned teeth are more prone to cavities because food particles are more likely to get stuck between teeth, making it difficult to clean them properly. New or worsening symptoms of TMJ dysfunction are also more prevalent among those affected by crooked teeth or a problem with their bite.

Straightening your teeth with Invisalign® dental aligners can lower your risk of tooth decay to ensure your teeth remain as healthy as possible through the years.

Many mature teens and adults prefer the transparency and aesthetic appeal of Invisalign® aligners over metal braces, which can also feel cumbersome and uncomfortable. Traditional metal braces also make it difficult to clean teeth without special tools.

While you must wear Invisalign® aligners for at least 22 hours per day, they are removable, making it easier to eat and practice proper oral hygiene, including brushing, rinsing, and flossing.

Wearing your Invisalign® aligners for the required amount of time ensures optimal results, while removing them when eating or drinking hot beverages helps prevent your aligners from warping and disrupting your treatment progress.

Choosing a cosmetic approach to address crooked teeth involves dental restorations, such as porcelain veneers or crowns, and includes the removal of tooth enamel to ensure a tight bond. Invisalign® treatment requires no tooth alterations, and unlike many traditional orthodontic methods, these aligners do not damage teeth.

Before receiving a cosmetic treatment to treat your misaligned teeth or bite, consider Invisalign® for a healthier and permanent solution.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign®?

Are you looking for a less visible orthodontic method to straighten your teeth that may work faster than braces? If so, Invisalign® may be right for you.

To help determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you want an effective teeth straightening treatment?
  • Do you want a discreet orthodontic solution?
  • Do you want to avoid the difficulty of cleaning your teeth associated with braces?
  • Do you feel less confident because of a crooked smile?
  • Are you committed to wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours daily?
    • Adults and teens with orthodontic needs willing and able to comply with this requirement may be excellent candidates for treatment with Invisalign®.

Invisalign® is proven effective in even severe cases of dental misalignment, and those with more substantial needs can also benefit from Invisalign® after other orthodontic procedures are completed.

Dr. Kohani has straightened some of the most challenging dental misalignments with Invisalign® alone or by combining this treatment with accelerated orthodontic techniques.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

Your Invisalign® treatment begins with a consultation that includes a dental exam to confirm your candidacy for Invisalign®. To understand the extent of your orthodontic issues, Dr. Kohani will take X-rays of your teeth and jaw before inspecting your teeth and gums. He will also review your medical history and previous dental records.

If Invisalign® is the best option for you, Dr. Kohani will obtain a 3D scan of your teeth and bite to create a custom Invisalign® treatment plan that outlines the predicted movement of your teeth.

Immediately after this initial appointment, your treatment plan, X-rays, dental records, and 3D scan will be sent to the Invisalign® lab, where they will create your custom dental aligners and a virtual model of your predicted results.

It takes about two to four weeks to receive your custom aligners, and Dr. Kohani will show you how to place and remove them correctly. Your follow-up appointments will be scheduled every four to six weeks so he can check your progress.

How Many Sets of Aligners Come With Invisalign®?

You may need as few as five or as many as 50 sets of Invisalign® aligners, and the total treatment time can take between two and 15 months to complete. The number of aligners you receive will depend on the extent of your misalignment and your personal treatment plan.

Wearing the aligners 22 hours every day is essential, and so is adhering to the designated order to ensure a smooth, effective, and comfortable process. Your teeth will move precisely, according to your current aligner, before they are ready for the next one, and if you skip a set, the rest of your aligners will not fit correctly.

Wearing your Invisalign® clear aligners for the directed amount of time will also help ensure optimal results, while removing your aligners when eating or drinking hot beverages will keep them from warping and interfering with your progress.

Is There Downtime Associated With Invisalign®?

While it’s common to experience discomfort after receiving traditional braces, there is no downtime associated with Invisalign® treatment.

You may experience some pressure for the first day or two with each new set of aligners as your teeth adjust. You will graduate to the next set of Invisalign® aligners every one to two weeks.

What Results Can I Expect After Treatment With Invisalign®?

Invisalign® aligners can straighten your teeth effectively, usually as fast or faster than metal braces. Invisalign®, results are typically permanent, and a special retainer worn at night can help you to maintain your newly straightened smile.
